Sorano

Sorano is situated in the Province of Grosseto in the heart of Tuscany Maremma in the “Area del Tufo” which has a different morphological characteristics and with a circulation of tuffaceous volcanic rocks (rocks of medium hardness suitable for processing).

The area is distinguished for rock settlements, villages and medieval fortifications with much of the territory situated in the hills with relief that truncates the hills and the adjoining villages of considerable importance as Sovana, Castell’Ottieri and Montorio. The area is important for its thermal springs “Spas of Sorano” which are just a few kilometers away from the village, in the Tufo area. In these places it is possible to regenerate your energies by giving attention to body and spirit.

The medieval village is adorned with alleys, courtyards, arches, rusticated doorways, exterior stairs, loggias and cellars hollowed in the “tuffo” where in the ancient times took place the whole process of harvesting and which still represents a unique peculiarity in Italy.

There are many religious architecture to see as the medieval Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas, the Chapel of Our Lady of Buonconsiglio, the Chapel of St. Barbara and the Jewish Ghetto built in 1619 by the Medici with its Synagogue.
